Introduction to the Foundation Laboratory of Civil Engineering and Architecture

Founded in 2003, the laboratory is affiliated with the School of Civil Engineering and Architecture, and conducts work relying on the two first-level disciplines of Civil Engineering and Architecture. It is dedicated to the teaching and research for undergraduates and graduates in Construction Engineering, Road and Bridge Engineering, and Geotechnical and Underground Engineering, Architecture and Urban Planning.

At present, the laboratory consists of five divisions for mechanics of materials, building materials, construction physics, building models, and engineering survey. We mainly undertake the teaching of courses on "Material Experiment", "Mechanics Experiment", "Architectural Physics", "Architectural Model", "Measurement" and so on. We have conducted 65 verification, integrated and designing experiments on the stretching, compression and twisting of steel bars; the stability of pressure bars, the density of sand accumulation; the strength of cement mortar; flatness, the compaction degree and deflection of pavement and subgrade; determination of relative humidity; the measurement of solar radiation intensity, of thermal conductivity, heat transfer coefficient, sound absorption coefficient and surface light reflectance of materials; levelling; the measurement of horizontal and vertical angles; total station topography; observation of building deformation and settlement; monitoring of deep foundation pits; production of Chinese and foreign ancient building components; performance of comprehensive building models, and production of complex shape models. We conduct not only all the experiments required by the experimental teaching syllabus, but also the ones demanded by the newly added majors. In the meantime, we provide innovative experimental services for our students. About 30,000 people fulfill their required experiment workload every year. We take full advantage of the current resources to contribute to the overall development of our school.

The 19,375 square-foot laboratory is located in the 16th group of Jinming Campus with divisions for building physics, engineering surveying and building models housed in Building A, the material mechanics division housed in Building B, and the building materials division housed in Building D. There are 10 full-time experimenters and teachers in the laboratory, five of them have senior titles and five intermediate titles. Three of them have PhD degrees while the other seven have master degrees. With a total value of more than 4.5 million yuan, our 850 sets of equipment include universal testing machines, pressure testing machines, torsion testing machines, computerized bitumen penetrometers, automatic digital asphalt viscosity meters, computerized asphalt softening point testers, digital linoleum impervious meters, concrete heat physical parameter testers, constant temperature and humidity curing boxes, architectural daylight factor meter, thermal conductivity tester, building acoustics test system, architectural model making machines, total stations, GNSS test systems, etc.

For a long time, the laboratory has not only devoted itself to the continuous improvement of basic conditions and equipment conditions, but also focused on exploring the best integration of theoretical teaching and practical teaching as well as actively upgrading the level of experimental teaching, so as to cultivate all-round and innovative talent with high quality and strong abilities.
